I’ve just spent several days on the phone moaning to BT about my broadband. They tell me it had been switched on a couple of days ago . . . . I’d checked the line and no banana. I have apologise to the BT call centre people I spoke to as the problem was not BT but an old bakelite bell box. The main wire from the BT socket first goes through the box below before reaching any sockets.
It seems that this is some sort of additional ringer for the hard of hearing. A very brief conversation between this box and a pair of wire cutters fixed the problem. Interesting old piece of kit all the same.
